About Sardaunan Katsina Platform

💡
The Sardaunan Katsina Digital Platform is an initiative founded by our patron, His Excellency Amb. Ahmed Rufa'i Abubakar who currently holds the title.

Origin of the title Sardauna

The prestigious and historic title of Sardauna is originated from Sokoto, the Headquarters of the Islamic Caliphate in Northern Nigeria. The title of Sardauna is the highest and most respected after the Sultan. Literally, Sardauna means Prime Minister, Leader of the princes and Commander of the Sultanate Armed Forces. Sardauna title is given to the most courageous, most popular and bravest of the princes. Sardauna is also in charge of the entire security forces, the prisons, works, veterinary and economy of the Sultanate.

The title of Sardauna is synonymous with the legendary Sir Ahmadu Bello, KBE, the Sardauna of Sokoto, Northern Nigeria’s first and only Premier (1910-1966), of blessed memory. History has It that Sir Ahmadu Bello Sardauna’s father Mallam Ibrahim, was a District Head in Rabah, Sokoto State, who was also the son to Sultan Abubakar Atiku, the 7th Sultan of Sokoto. This means that his grandfather and his great grandfather were graciously Sultans. The paternal grandmother of Sardauna Ahmadu was a descendant of Dabo’s ruling house of Kano. This naturally means Sardauna was born and raised in royalty.

Borrowing Chieftaincy titles among the Emirates in Northern Nigeria is a historical phenomenon.   However, it is a standing practice that only people of proven integrity, popularity and relevance commensurate to the holders of the title in the borrowing kingdom of the title origin can be honoured with the title.

It was in his magnanimity and foresight, the Emir of Katsina Alhaji (Dr.) Muhammadu Kabir Usman, CFR, borrowed the title of Sardauna from its base, Sokoto, and honoured late Inspector General of Police, Alhaji (Dr.) Ibrahim Ahmadu Coomassie, GCON, as the first Sardauna of Katsina on 25th March, 2000. Following the death of Sardaunan Katsina Ibrahim Coomassie on 19th July, 2018, the Emir of Katsina, Alhaji (Dr.) Abdulmumini Kabir Usman, CFR, honoured Senator Ibrahim Ida with the title of Sardaunan Katsina on 13th October, 2018.

With the elevation of Alhaji Ibrahim Ida to the tittle of Wazirin Katsina, His Royal Highness, the Emir of Katsina, after due consultations with his Council found Ambassador Ahmed Rufai Abubakar, CFR most suited to be honoured with the prestigious and historic title of Sardaunan Katsina on Saturday 31st December, 2022 in recognition of his contributions to Katsina State, the Nation and the World at large.
